About the Artist
I've always had a keen interest in aviation. No wonder since I grew up next to Barksdale Air Force Base and could see B-52 bombers, A-10 Warthogs and even the occasional Royal Air Force Vulcan flying overhead as I grew up. Since my father was retired from the Air Force I had access to the base library and spent many days there reading every book available on airplanes or cycling out to the edge of the flightline to see the B-52's on alert armed with Hound Dog missiles or SRAM's. As I grew up there was nothing I wanted more than to grow up to be a pilot and maybe even an astronaut.
I was crushed when I realized that people with glasses couldn't be pilots in the air force (later that changed with the acceptance of laser eye surgery but that was far too late for me). I thought about various careers but ended up in art. I studied graphic design while earning a Bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport but soon found out upon graduation that graphic designers don't make much money starting out. I decided to improve my qualifications and applied for the Master of Fine Arts degree at the Savannah College of Art & Design. After completing my degree I was soon offered a teaching position at the college and I've been a professor there ever since. My love of aviation never faded however and I began to search for a way to combine my various interests. Eventually I found my calling and the prints available on this website are the result. I hope you enjoy these images and welcome any constructive comments you might have.
Sincerely,
Greg Johnson
